The Spinning Wheel Allegory: A Dialogue on Divine Existence and Cosmic Order
A scholar saw an old woman spinning a charkha and said,
"Old woman! Have you spent your entire life spinning, or have you ever recognized your God?"
The old woman replied,
"My dear, I have seen everything in this very spinning wheel."
The scholar then asked,
"Tell me, does God exist or not?"
She answered,
"Yes, God is present every moment, both day and night."
The scholar inquired further,
"But what is the evidence?"
The old woman replied,
"My evidence is this spinning wheel."
The scholar questioned,
"How so?"
She explained,
"It works in such a way that as long as I keep it spinning, it continues to move steadily, and when I let go, it stops. Just as this small charkha requires someone to operate it continuously, so too must the vast wheels of the Earth, sky, Moon, and Sun require a mover. As long as the mover keeps them running, they continue to function, but if the mover were to stop, they would come to a halt. Yet, we have never seen the Earth or the heavens, the Moon or the Sun, ever come to a stop; therefore, their mover must be present at every moment."
The scholar then asked,
"Now, tell me—does the wheel of the heavens and the Earth have one mover or two?"
The old woman replied,
"There is only one. The evidence is in my charkha. When I set it spinning in a particular direction by my will, it moves accordingly. If there were a second operator, the wheel's speed would increase and become inconsistent. Moreover, if that second operator acted contrary to my will, the wheel would come to a stop—but that does not happen. Similarly, if there were another mover for the wheels of the heavens and the Earth, the speed of the heavenly wheel would alter, disrupting the natural cycle of day and night, or it would halt or break. Since none of these occur, it is clear that there is only one mover for
the heavens and the Earth."
