Umar Farooq’s Final Moments: A Lesson in Humility and Accountability

When Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) was assassinated and wounded, he was given milk to treat his wounds. But the milk came out of his wound. The doctor said: "O Commander of the Faithful! Your days are limited, make a will."

Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) called his son Abdullah and said:

"Bring Hudhaifah bin Al-Yaman to me."

Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) was the companion to whom the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had told the names of the hypocrites, and this secret was known only to Allah, the Messenger of Allah, and Hudhaifah.

When Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, despite the blood flowing,

"O Hudhaifah! I swear to you by Allah, did the Messenger of Allah name me among the hypocrites?"

Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) remained silent and his eyes filled with tears. Umar insisted:

"Tell me, for the sake of Allah, did you mention my name?"

Hudhayfah said, weeping:

"I cannot tell this secret to anyone, but I assure you that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not mention your name among the hypocrites."

Hearing this, Umar said to his son Abdullah:

"Now I have only one desire left in this world."

Abdullah asked:

"What is that, O father?"

Umar said:

"Go to Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and tell her that Umar ibn al-Khattab sends greetings, and do not say that Amir al-Mu'minin sends greetings, because I am not the Amir al-Mu'minin today. And tell her that Umar requests that he be allowed to be buried with his two companions (the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and Abu Bakr as-Siddiq)."

Abdullah went and asked Aisha's permission. She was crying at that time, but she said:

"I wanted to keep this place for myself, but today I sacrifice it for Umar."

Abdullah returned happily and reported. But Umar's face was on the ground. Abdullah wanted to put his face on his thigh, so Umar said:

"Let my face be on the ground, so that I may present myself humbly before my Lord. Woe to Umar, if his Lord does not forgive him."

Umar advised:

"When my funeral prayer is held, take care of Hudhayfah. If he attends my funeral prayer, then consider that Allah has forgiven me. Then take me to the door of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)'s chamber and say:

'O mother! Your son Umar asks permission.' If he gives permission, bury me there, otherwise bury me in the common Muslim cemetery."

So when Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) had offered the funeral prayer, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was taken to the door of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with him)’s chamber and permission was sought. She granted permission, and Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was buried with his two companions.

May Allah have mercy on Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). Those who were given the glad tidings of Paradise, still trembled with fear of Allah. But today we live a life of heedlessness and fearlessness, neither accounting for our deeds nor worrying about our Hereafter.

O Allah, bestow upon us our final end, and forgive us and our Muslim brothers.

Moral:

Umar Farooq’s final moments remind us of the profound importance of humility before Allah and the need for constant self-accountability. His actions teach us that true strength lies in recognizing our imperfections, seeking forgiveness, and maintaining a sincere fear of Allah in all aspects of life.
